Richard Hom OD PhD MPA
Dr. Hom is currently the Optometric Director at Anthem, Inc. He received his B.S from the University of California, Berkeley and his O.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Additionally, he was awarded an MPA from San Francisco State University where his Capstone project was on physician attitudes on the adoption of retinal photographic screening for diabetic retinopathy screening. In 2017, Dr. Hom was awarded the Diplomate in Public Health and Environmental Vision by the American Academy of Optometry. In 2018, he received his PhD in Bioscience from Salus University and wrote his dissertation on the relationship of social determinants such as food and environment on function and disability in adults.
Over the last 16 years, Dr. Hom has designed, launched and led photographic screening programs for disease surveillance that in each instance are still in operation. His interest in population health in eye care has spurred his interest in incorporating identifying “at risk” individuals for future chronic systemic disease in addition to the full breadth of optometric care including refractive and medical management of common eye conditions. He currently lectures on population health, health care systems, and the integration of optometry and primary care medicine.
